Berth on the Boat – Definition and Pronunciation

[bɜːrθ]

What is Berth?

A berth in the aft part of the boat on either side of the companionway stairs, often located partially under the cockpit.

Examples of Berth

The boat has a large cockpit and a small cuddy cabin with a couple of berths and not much else. The Ensign still has an active racing fleet and web presence.

From “Cruising in Comfort on a Sailboat”.

We told all the passengers at once to go to their rooms and get their lifebelts. In every berth there is a lifebelt. There are notes and diagrams in every room showing how these lifebelts are worn.

From “The Lusitania Sinking Eyewitness Accounts From Survivors”.

While the rules don’t say anything specifically about ferryboats, the courts have repeatedly ruled that ferries have the right-of-way. In general, give commercial vessels a wide berth whenever possible.
