Doppler Effect – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˈdɑːp.lɚ ɪˈfɛkt]

What is Doppler Effect?

Doppler effect is the change in the observed frequency (or wavelength) of a wave, caused by a time rate of change in the effective path length between the source and the point of observation.

Examples of Doppler Effect

The LEOSAR system is based on low polar orbit. The system is based on the use of the Doppler effect which occurs between satellite and emergency radar beacon and which is used to determine the latter’s position.

From “The Essential Guide to Emergency Radio Beacons”.

Among these is the need to compensate for gateway and satellite component performance changes over temperature and life, satellite and ground station pointing errors, and signal propagation amplitude and phase dispersion effects, including Doppler shifts.

From “Aeronautical Mobility Services”.

The position of the EPIRB can be found by the satellite using Doppler frequency-shift measurement techniques.
