[kəʊˈes.dʌbl.ju.pi]

What is COSWP?

COSWP stands for the “Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers.” It is a comprehensive guide issued by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency that provides safety guidelines and best practices for those working on merchant ships. The code covers a wide range of topics, including risk assessment, emergency procedures, and personal safety measures to help minimize workplace hazards at sea.

Examples of COSWP

Chapter 10 of the “International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals (ISGOTT)” (Reference 2.4) and Chapter 15 of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP) (Reference 2.87) describe certain hazards associated with entry into enclosed spaces and the tests to be carried out to determine whether or not an enclosed space has been made safe for entry.
