Impeller – Definition and Pronunciation

[ɪmˈpɛl.ər]

What is Impeller?

Impeller is the blades on a rotary pump that draw and force the water through the pump.

Examples of Impeller

You should be able to turn the impeller by hand and when you do this, check for any play in the drive system (you’re unlikely to be able to turn the hydraulically powered thrusters on larger yachts by hand, although they are less vulnerable to corrosion).

From “Stern Gear – Technical Recommendations for Inspection and Maintenance”.

For spare parts, you definitely want to have extra propeller shear pins, a new spark plug, an extra fuel filter, and a new impeller. Some extra engine oil wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially if you have a four-stroke engine, and I like to keep a small tube of silicone dielectric grease on board. Some spare hose clamps, a little binding wire, and even a bit of extra fuel line might save the day.

From “Maintaining and Modifying Your Sailboat”.

The impeller shot into my hand with the force from the water, and what seemed to be a giant fountain of seawater sprang up from the impeller’s mounting hole. I screwed the cap on quickly – it was all over in three or four seconds – and looked at the water that had come in from a 11/2-inch hole. Maybe 4 or 5 gallons!
