Ball Valve – Definition and Pronunciation

[bɔːl vælv]

What is Ball Valve?

Ball valves are designed for marine and industrial applications. The working part of the valve is a round ball with a hole through the center, which is attached to a handle on the outside of the valve housing. When the handle is parallel to the end openings on the valve, it is in the open position. When the handle is turned 90 degrees from the length of the valve (openings on either end) it is in the closed position.

Examples of Ball Valve

On modern boats, it is the ball valve that is widely used and this requires just a quarter of a turn on the operating lever to open or close the valve, which makes operation quick and simplifies things in an emergency. Here there are seals inside the valve to ensure the whole thing is watertight when closed.

Use of clamps
Seacocks should be double-clamped with all-stainless hose clamps. This installation shows a marine-related ball valve attached to a through-hull – not the best arrangement. True seacocks have a flange on the base that is bolted to the surface of the hull

A plastic ball valve was probably the best solution for the problem. Certainly, there should be a valve on all through hull fittings, not only for repair and replacement, but in the event a fitting fails inboard of the hull surface. You can’t be too careful when using different metals in the marine environment.

The overboard exhaust hose must be looped high above the waterline through an antisiphon elbow, then attached to a sea cock or ball valve, where it exhausts through the hull. All water hoses should be in good condition, have a fair run, and not leak.
